When I was 14, I took guitar lessons after school. There was one song I wanted to learn more than any other: Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. After six months, I quit. Mostly because I didn't enjoy learning music theory or taking exams. I even had to sing notes from a sheet without ever hearing what they were supposed to sound like first. I hated it. So I gave up. And with that, I also gave up on ever learning that song. Seventeen years later, while looking for songs to learn on the handpan, this was the very first one YouTube suggested to me. Almost as if the algorithm knew it had been sitting on my bucket list all these years. I learned it in a single day. That's one of the things I love about the handpan. It's such an accessible instrument that it lets you focus on making music instead of getting lost in theory. I still can't believe I can finally cross this off my bucket list. Even though it wasn't on the guitar, playing this song felt truly amazing. And I'm proud.
